How to Spend 1 Week in Laos

So, you’re planning a trip to Laos? First of all—good choice. This landlocked gem of Southeast Asia often gets overshadowed by its flashier neighbors (Thailand, we’re looking at you 👀), but if you’re into jaw-dropping nature, laid-back vibes, and eating more sticky rice than you thought humanly possible, Laos is your kind of place. We visited Laos in between Thailand and Vietnam, in February.

Here’s how to spend one epic week (six full days) in Laos without losing your sanity, your passport, or your appetite.

OVERVIEW (CITY BREAKDOWN; Detailed itineraries for each city are linked below)

We flew into Vientiene and flew out of Luang Prabang. You could reverse the order depending on your flight path!

Day 1: Vientiene

Days 2-4: Vang Vieng

Days 5-6: Luang Prabang

Day 1: Vientiene (1 Day)

Vientiane isn’t your average chaotic Southeast Asian capital. Nope—this city is on Lao time, which means everything moves at nap speed. It’s the perfect soft landing.

🛕 Wat Sisaket – Oldest temple in Vientiane, with thousands of tiny Buddha statues. Peaceful and photogenic.
🐉 That Dam Stupa – A quick but cool stop with mysterious Naga serpent folklore.
🏛️ Patuxay (Victory Monument) – Laos’ Arc de Triomphe with panoramic city views.
🙏 Wat Si Muang – A spiritually significant temple with fascinating legends and vibrant murals.
🍽️ Lunch at Kung’s Café – Hidden gem! Banana flower salad, mango-stuffed rice pancakes, coconut coffee. So good.
🌙 Ban Anou & Vientiane Night Market – Great for street food, souvenirs, and riverside vibes. Don’t miss the cheese pull cake!
